How this report was made. This report is generated using artificial intelligence, from open-source data, scored on the public Kin Score rubric, and every company in it is named and banded rather than cherry-picked. If anything in it is wrong, tell me and it is corrected in the next version — and if it was not worth what you paid, I will refund it. Read how the reports are produced →

About this report

API Evangelist has now scored four banking markets — Australia and the UK under mandates, the United States under a fractured voluntary regime, and now Canada — and Canada produces the starkest result of the four. It is the emptiest banking market measured. The sector’s average composite is 17.0, well below the UK, Australia, and even the fragmented US. Only four of the forty-two institutions publish any machine-readable API contract at all; thirty-seven of forty-two are, to an autonomous agent, completely invisible. And the single most telling fact in the whole report: the three highest scores in Canadian banking are not banks — they are the shared payment rails and processors, with the best-scoring actual bank, Scotiabank, in third.

API Evangelist reads every institution the way an integrator or an agent would — not the marketing site, the machine-readable evidence — for two readers: the person who runs one of these programs and the investor trying to see which programs went beyond the mandate and which stopped at it. Canada’s Big Six control roughly 90% of the market and no rule yet requires them to open, and the result is not a curated oligopoly of polished APIs — it is near-silence, with two of the six largest banks scoring like stubs. A mandate produces existence without quality; a concentrated market with no mandate produces neither. This report is the map of that vacuum, scored provider by provider, with the investable thesis and a punch-list any institution could execute to own a field that has, so far, declined to start.

What's inside

  1. Executive summary — the emptiest banking market, where the rails outrank the banks
  2. The state of the sector — concentration without a mandate
  3. The resource taxonomy — the rails have the surface, the banks don't
  4. The composite Kin Score — and why it's the foundation
  5. Agent-readiness — an entire sector the machine cannot see
  6. The blueprint — the bar is on the floor
  7. The standards layer — the empty cell
  8. The regulatory layer — legislated, and not switched on
  9. Standards and artifacts — why this matters for the agentic turn
  10. Security, auth, scopes, and consent — a thin, honest floor
  11. Provider-by-provider intelligence — the rails, the Big Six, and the tail
  12. The investable thesis — the emptiest market, and what fills a vacuum
